Welcome, and… why?

Welcome to the second version of my blog Visionsong. In 2006, I launched a blog about music and other things, because I had a lot of time on my hands (I was working as a musician on a cruise ship), and it seemed like the think to do. Time passed, blogs became a bit more passe, so I let it go. I’ll be sharing edited versions of some of what I feel is the best of that experiment as I go, but that’s not why I’m writing this.

SO why bring it back? Well, first, once again, thanks to our national medical emergency, I have a lot of time on my hands. Second, now instead of being an itinerant musician, I am a high school teacher, who is blessed to be in a program that has historically been one of the best in the region, if not the country. And suddenly I don’t get to work with them in person, for what looks like quite a while. These are talented, exciting young people, with a lot of talent but less experience. And unfortunately, you can’t create experience online.

But what I can do is guide them to, I hope, the kinds of experiences that made my development as a young musician successful. I’ll be sharing a bunch of posts, some with words, some with video, trying to translate whatever I’ve gained by working with some amazing people- peers and teachers alike- into something that my students can use. If you have young musicians in your life, please share it with them. And I hope you enjoy the ride!
